A silver-white metallic element, the last of
the lanthanide series, symbol Lu, atomic
number 71, atomic weight 174.97. It is used
in the `cracking', or breakdown, of petroleum
and in other chemical processes. It was named
by its discoverer, French chemist G Urbain
(1872-1938) for his native city Paris, called
Lutetia in Latin.
